Fairview students get anti-bullying message
George Anthony (back row, from left) and Lindy P. Crescitelli, Peace Dynamics Consultants, joined Fairview Elementary School Principal Matthew Kirkpatrick and students, Raelynn Santoro (middle row, from left) Thomas Barneo, Christopher Bonin, Matthew Rosinski, Megan Froehlich and Kaitlin Tarter, as well as Jillian LaFrier (front row, from left) Alex Lehotsky, Liam O'Brien, Alec Zenker and Robert Cassin on Monday to discuss anti-bullying practices in school.
MIDDLETOWN — On Monday, students at Fairview Elementary School, here, gathered in the all purpose room for “Stand Up and Lead,” one of the most successful anti-bullying programs in the country, given by conflict resolution experts George Anthony and Lindy P. Crescitelli, of Red Bank and New York City Peace Dynamics Consultants. New Jersey recently passed legislation establishing stricter guidelines addressing harassment, intimidation and bullying. Matthew Kirkpatrick, Fairview’s principal, wanted to make sure students received instruction that would empower them to deal with these issues in a productive manner. Peace Dynamics provided that instruction and much more.
The assembly was divided into two 50-minute sessions for grades K-3 and 4-5. The children listened attentively as Mr. Anthony and Mr. Crescitelli demonstrated the importance of recognizing that we are all part of the same community and our actions have an effect on everyone in that community. Their use of key words and lively role-playing provided an entertaining forum for the students to learn valuable lessons and acquire useful tools to resolve conflict. At the end, there was an energetic chorus of young voices pledging to utilize all that they had learned during the program. Christopher Bonin, a fifth grade student, commented on the way out, “Stand Up and Lead” rocks!
